Turntable

Turntable

The Arizona & Pacific Railroad's 23 foot “A-frame, gallows-style” turntable isn’t patterned after any one particular prototype, but incorporates features we liked from several different turntables which have survived either in person or in photograph.

Since the property is irrigated (flooded with 8 inches of water every two weeks for the grass and fruit trees) a standard turntable pit wasn’t possible. We designed a ring rail and center-pin assembly elevated above the ground by block pedestals. The rear is enclosed by a block retaining wall and the front opens to the rest of the property.

The entire turntable is custom built from steel including the one inch tension rods and rod feet. The wood planking, which was cut and fitted, and the turnbuckles are the only off the shelf components.
